A college town, somewhere in India

“She had done everything asked of her. It still wasn't enough.”

Her father is a barber — a trade passed down through generations in their family. She broke that pattern early: strong in academics from secondary school onward, and eventually a computer engineering degree with a specialization in machine learning.

Her parents, on a modest income, paid for her education and her sister's. Neither of them ever suggested it might not be worth it.

Graduation is a few weeks away. There are no job offers yet. Not one.

She has the credential. She has the skill. What she doesn't have is a pathway from one to the other — and nothing in her years of study ever named that gap, or prepared her for the possibility that it existed.
